Is Warren Gatland’s 50% Wales-win ratio good enough?

With the autumn internationals drawing to a close for another year, and with Wales yet again failing to beat Australia and New Zealand the clamour to replace Warren Gatland and his coaching staff is growing.

But, is this criticism of Warren Gatland fair? Is his 50% win ratio as head coach of Wales acceptable, or should Welsh rugby supporters expect better?

How do his stats as head coach of Wales measure up to the other 7 head coaches of the other 7 nations who,  along with Wales, make up the current IRB top 8 world rankings?

The list below indicates the win % of each head coach as well as the number of games won/total number of games as head coach.

Eddie Jones (England) – 96%  won 22/23

Steve Hansen (New Zealand) – 89%  won 72/83

Joe Schmidt (Ireland) – 70% won 35/70

Gregor Townsend (Scotland) – 67% won 4/6

Michael Cheika (Australia) – 52% won 24/46

Warren Gatland (Wales) – 50% won 48/96

Allister Coetzee (South Africa) – 46% won 11/24

Guy Novès (France) – 33% won 7/21

(% has been rounded up/down to nearest decimal place)
